If I’m understanding this correctly, it’s a pretty lame joke. Of course she would know that man, as he’s the only one dressed smartly! She’s a snob from the Upper-East Side, so why would she know who those other riff-raff are? Har-har.

Are all the men meant to look alike, or is that just an accident of the style? If intentional, could that be the joke?
Hunh. I posted that here before looking back at the other thread. I can’t disagree that it’s a set up, meant to have her identify the one well-dressed guy. But that’s not inconsistent with noting their faces aee all the same. Actually that could even sharpen the point – only the clothes can distinguish them, but indeed that is enough.
I think she’s hunting for a husband.
A good lineup will have everyone look about the same…they should all match the witness’s initial description. That way, the witness is narrowing it down further.
@dvandom, yes, but “good” from whose point-of-view? you are right from the viewpoint of actual justice or fairness. But less-than-perfectly-scrupulous police or prosecutors have treated the goodness of an identity parade as a matter of giving the desired result.
