Yes, we set a fire. But how dare you insinuate that it has anything to do with this disaster?
I don’t know if this is necessarily politics, so much as people who refuse to take responsibility for things, or admit the obvious, even when the facts are right in front of them. Admittedly, that has a pretty close connection to politics.
The funny thing is that denying causality ultimately leads to the impossibility of doing anything purposeful, whether good or bad; history becomes a construct and heroes are just random people.
We didn’t start the fire – it was always burning since the world’s been turning.
Marge: That house is on fire!
Lionel Hutz: “Motivated seller”.
No, mother, it’s just the Northern Lights.
The roof, the roof, the roof ISN’T on fire! (yet)
Olivier’s
Marge: That house is on fire!
Lionel Hutz: “Motivated seller”.
……
To explain this joke, I was think more along the lines of:
Prosecutor: Isn’t that true, *Car-jacker* Willie
Defender: Objection, your Honor!
Judge: I’ll allow it. It establishes the defendant as a car-jacker.
I think the joke is (typical of F-‘s humor motives) is simply seeing something that is obviously X and having someone someone not accepting that X implies X. The joke is: if it is humorous if we see someone refuse to see an obvious connection of X implies Y, then it would be very meta and surreal if we had a person refuse to see that X implies X.
Cause and Effect seems to be a hard thing to comprehend lately. Not sure where the disconnect is happening. Could being able to simply hit reset and undo all the carnage in a video game have any bearing?
The kids are getting their story straight. Greenshirt is basically saying “we’re going to deny everything” without technically putting it into words. He will grow up to become an expert at avoiding conspiracy charges.
Back to politics.
