She doesn’t feel as if she’s doing enough with her life, in comparison to everyone else. Rather than make her feel better about what she *is* doing, he’s raising the bar to the point that she’ll never feel adequate.
He’s one of those folksy, “common-sense” “tough-love” types. The kind that says fat people are gluttons, the unemployed are lazy, kids who fail to graduate are stupid, refugees are “illegal aliens”, gays are perverts and addicts are weak-willed. Always finding fault. Pretty common. The rich and powerful like the narrative that those who have are morally deserving of having by dint of their many virtues.
The reality, of course, is that if she is doing anything remotely positive, even if it is drawing a comic strip of questionable quality and humour that provides some small bit of entertainment, that is a contribution to society.
This reads less like a comic strip than a fortune cookie.
Someone lying on the couch with a therapist behind them means the therapist be a Freudian. Freudian are not suppose to tell you things, but allow you to discover them for yourself. He should not be advising or telling her anything like this – only guide her through what she is telling him.
