I think the Wizard figured he couldn’t restrict his “Zot!” to light individual candles, so he had to wait for the day on which it was okay to zap all nine of them.
P.S. – For those who might not know: the candle in the middle is the “lighter”, used to ignite the others.

Actually the last day of Chanukah is sometimes called “Zot Chanukah” (pronounced “Zote Chanukah”) to Sefardim. (That’s “Zos (Zose) Chanukah” to Ashkenazim.) after the Torah passage beginning “Zos chanukas hamizbe’ach” (“This is the dedication of the altar”) read in the synagogue that day.

Done correctly, in-jokes should be a treat for those who get it and totally invisible to those who don’t. If Pinny’s explanation is right, the Wizard did it perfectly.

I don’t think The Wizard of Id every really did much along those lines. That was B.C., Hart’s solo work. This strip was a collaboration with Brant Parker. At any rate, Johnny Hart has been dead for years. His grandson does this strip.

It’s over and I have not even managed to get my Chanukah stuffed bear with menorah that can be lit candle by candle, out yet on display.

We actually have no sense of when Chanukah begins and ends: since our kids went off to school (and subsequently moved out of town), our family’s Chanukah has been fixed at the last weekend of December.
I refer to it as Greek Orthodox Chanukah.

Bill – One year my BIL was in the hospital for an extensive period starting in December. (Straight through his early January birthday). We had Chanukah in late January that year.
