   Yeah, I had the same thought. I know he’s trying to say she’s not getting old and fat, but given the state of mind she’s obviously in, it’s the sort of comment she could easily zero in on and give him grief over.

   Or he could just mean “even with a whole two pounds gain” (semi sarcastic) which should be seen as well short of “old and fat”.

   I think Janis is a sexy lady. To me, she won’t outgrow that.

   He said it in the dark, when he couldn’t see her and she assumed he was just reflexively complimenting her. In the light, he could say “Yeah, I see you’re getting fat.” I’m guessing that’s the logic.

   I thought the same. But he could be thinking “because you are sexy as ever, you never change so you never will, so you will never be old and fat” and… well, he definitely got away with what one would normally get a huge pillow pummeling.

   I don’t really find the given explanations satisfying. I think it’s more in Arlo territory. Note that in the third panel Arlo has propped his head up, and has a sort of lear in his eyes. Janis is implying that if Arlo had said that before the lights were out it would have been a legitimate compliment, but since he waited he had other things on his mind. Also, note his eye roll in the last panel.

   To me, “You’re as sexy as ever” is saying that Arlo finds her just as attractive as when they first met. He totally meant his statement as a reassuring compliment. I can see where it could be misconstrued, particularly when Janis is in this sort of mood. And note in the third panel – just what is Arlo doing under the covers with his left hand?
