The tortoise will not provide refuge without a fee, and requires the prospective tenant to complete an application that includes proof of income, in addition to the normal security deposit, etc. The cost is too much for the turkey.

Landlords in tight rental markets demand to see proof of income, which may include one’s most recent pay stub. They also feel entitled to get one’s credit history.

I have never been able to rent without providing proof of pay, so I got the joke but did not find it at all relatable.

@ joel hanes, As a landlord, I feel proof of income and a background check (including a credit check) is essential. It can take up to a year to evict a tenant, so it makes sense to be as careful as possible when renting.

When we rented our apartment the only thing I remember is relief at finding some place. I did not get to see the apartment as Robert and his parents had seen it and they would only let one look at it once. If they did ask for proof of salary, my boss was with us when we signed the lease – my dad, who in addition to being an accountant was an attorney.
