Are you expected to laugh while reading a laugh therapy book? I mean, I wouldn’t expect someone reading a massage therapy book in a coffee shop to be massaging somebody.
Also, maybe he really needs some laughter, and that’s why he’s reading the book. Someone who was laughing already wouldn’t need to read it.

I’m not familiar with the strip. Perhaps the guy is a continuing character that makes his reading a laugh therapy book funny. On the other hand, it may be a strip that misfires.
I’ve tried laugh therapy – it really does help sometimes. I usually do it in the car, where if someone sees me, well, who cares? I’ve also tried the thing where you carry a pencil in your mouth to force it into a smile configuration. That works too, a little. I have a really mean resting face, and when I do the pencil thing, my resting face gets nicer.
