Bill is coming back from negotiations with the Amerinds. The guy on our left is ignoring the fact that Bill is almost certainly dead, and trying to keep a positive attitude. Maybe things went well, and all those arrows are gifts.
The guy on the left just hasn’t noticed the arrows yet.
He doesn’t want to just ASSUME these noble savages would riddle a peace emissary with arrows without hearing him out, so he wants to hear what Bill said (and heard) during the exchange before he decides these are bloodthirsty savages who need to be shot from a safe distance.

Mitch4: you missed in FBS’s post shot and quiver, and maybe pull this, so I’d say, yes, feather in your cap was very intentional! :-)
I wonder whether this would have been posted here if the soldier had a different name. Gary Larson once mentioned that his “Beware of Doug” comic seemed to have a certain amount of (lasting) popularity, although this appeared to be concentrated among those persons whose name was “Doug”.
Oh gosh, yeah!

Kilby’s “Doug” panel reminds me of high school in a small town. Kids were initially tempted to giggle at the pronunciation of Swedish exchange student Dag’s name, until he joined the football team as a place kicker. The boy could throw a snap kick in the air and nail a soda can with his wooden klog from half a block away.
“The chief said THIS.” [Shoots arrow at one of the men.] “Then the guy next to him said THIS.” [Shoots arrow at the next man.] “Then three of them all at once said THIS.” [Shoots three arrows at once hitting three men.]
The natives are promoting the use of a new, improved, arrow, and were willing to give multiple free samples of it to Bill as he represents their target audience.
