March of Dimes

Okay, getting a bit of a late start this year…

The New Jersey walkathon takes place April 29. but we’re all going to be in Chicago that weekend. When first I asked, I was told the Chicago walk was scheduled for mid-May. This was disheartening, since we’ve been doing this very year, rain or shine — occasionally rain — since 1993, and it would take until just short of my 87th birthday to complete another 25-year run.

But I re-checked yesterday, and sure enough the Chicago walk is going to be April 29 after all. So twenty-five years after my son and I started doing this together (at his suggestion), we’re going to show Chicago how walkathons are walked (and then head over to Wrigley Field).

For the past 14 years, you guys have been my partners in this as well, always (collectively) my biggest sponsors. And every single year you’ve donated more than the year before, which is extraordinary. I know that’s a tough goal this year because a) late start, b) people are still re-finding the site after January’s disaster, and c) last year’s $1312 was really a lot of money. So whatever we raise, even if it’s not $1313, will be great.

($1313 would just be greater, is all…)

Isn’t it about time that they modernized the title? However, I must admit that “March of Quarters” or “March of Halves” doesn’t sound quite as good, and neither one would really correct the inflation problem.

P.S. I also considered “March of Eisenhowers” or “March of Susan B. Anthonys“, but that would confuse the issue even more.

March for Babies is the March of Dimes walkathon page. Why it’s a separate site, and they make it so difficult for people who accidentally log onto the MoD site to find the link to the MfB site (not that I’ve ever made that mistake), is a mystery to me.

I’m also not entirely sure when they dropped “Walkathon” favor of “March for Babies.”

    Anyway, thanks, Chak.

Kilby, organization’s name comes from a dream Eleanor Roosevelt had about an army of dimes marching.

Hey, Bill, if you’re going to be in Chicago, care to have a meetup? Unless you’d rather spend time with your family. Some people are funny that way.

Not saying I’m brilliant or anything, I just thought I should mention that I looked for a link to donate for a long time before realizing it was the image.

Donating via Paypal did not work for me: when I clicked on the button, nothing happened.

@Oliver I used Paypal and briefly lost the pop-up behind the browser. I can’t remember whether it was a Paypal pop-up or the donation site popup. It was an unusual Paypal experience so I didn’t think pop-up right away.

@Kevin A: nope, nothin’ doin’; clicking on “donate XX with Paypal” just doesn’t do anything. Credit card worked, though.
