The Fonz is famous for “AY!”. “Eh?” is Bob and Doug McKenzie.

“And knowing is half the battle!” sounds like the catchphrase from the 30-second tag they put at the end of each episode, so that they could claim that “G.I.Joe” was “educational programming for children”, which broadcasters used to be required to provide.

I think the cartoonist wanted to do something funny with “And knowing is half the battle” and this was the best they had. I don’t think they succeeded.
There are much better jokes based on “And knowing is half the battle,” where the joke relies on what the other half of the battle is (gun, red and blue lasers, a good strategic position, more troops, etc).

I’d saved the comic, but hadn’t yet posted it.

Your mention that Winkler had never never played the role saved me the trouble of looking it up, because you’re a reliable source

Isn’t Pop Culture Shock Therapy simply “Here’s one thing you recognize! Here is another thing you recognize! Ta-dah! Comic!

So… I don’t know if there is actually anything there to get. It’s just…. here are two things! Now they are together!

“Your mention that Winkler had never never played the role saved me the trouble of looking it up”

I looked it up, not because of doubts about the reliability of the witness, but in a “leave no tern unstoned” mode.

You have to admit, of all the people who MIGHT have been the Cobra Commander, Mr. Winkler wasn’t even on your radar, was it? He might have gotten away from it, if not for those infernal teenagers and their talking dog!

Fighting. Or, sometimes, not fighting. Choosing correctly comes under “knowing”.

A few weeks ago I met Larry Hama at a comic convention. He developed the comic book characters and character bio cards on the back of the action figures, but was not involved with the cartoon series whatsoever. He said he was confused why people started saying “Knowing is Half the Battle” to him everywhere.

I assumed the actual fighting of the actual battle was the other half of the battle….but that might be because it was basically a show about fighting.

…I didn’t actually watch the show. My brother had it on, but he ran around the house yelling the theme song (he can’t sing) and playing with action figures, so I’m not sure he really watched it, either.

“If knowing is half the battle, what’s the other half?”

    Realizing that it doesn’t matter?

(Actually, bat is half the battle, and tle is the other half.)

Let’s see what wordpress does with a JPG (probably drops me into moderation…)

I assume this won’t show up as a picture, but this is the answer to Mark in Boston’s question above.

… hunh. It worked perfectly. Of all the possible things that WordPress might do, “working perfectly the way I wanted it to” wasn’t an outcome I was prepared for.
