Just the other day (yes, that day) I heard on the radio (or saw on tv?) someone talking about different New Years traditions from different countries. and one was stuffing 12 grapes in your mouth (they said all at once, though the internet seems to prefer one per second) Anyway. It’s a thing

James, that’s precisely my point: when somebody is strongly incentivized to eat super-quickly, even the most talented chewers are going to skip a few chomps.

I did eat some grapes today. I did not count them nor did I make any wishes while consuming them.

I saw something about this tradition a couple days ago – and that reference did say one on each stroke of the hour (which assumes a chiming clock or something equivalent…).

It was rather amusing, actually. Last night we were at a New Years party, that we go to every year – and realized as we went outside to see their (homemade) ball drop that no one had an actual watch, that counted down seconds. I ended up starting a one-minute timer as the time rolled over to 11:59, and counting off that.

“woozy, Tia Carmen said “As fast as possible.”

Are you going to argue with Tia Carmen?”

By no means! Eat them as fast as you can….. one right after the other.

Grapes are too easy. I think I’ll try to promote a new New Year’s tradition in which you have to do this instead with twelve watermelons.

If giving grapes to a grade-school-age child offends your parental instinct, give them raisins.
