Heh… I just saw Woman Walks Ahead the other day, and the portrait of Sitting Bull got me thinking of the Indian portrait used on the Indian head nickle (now on the $50 gold coin) (which is not Sitting Bull, I know), and it struck me how …what’s the word I want? Ironic? Tauntingly mean spirited? .. it is to feature the likeness of a representative of a people we basically exterminated so as to steal their land on our national currency. The buffalo on the back is just salt in the wound.

Historians agree that Lincoln won the debate. It just didn’t matter, since Senators were not chosen by popular election, and the state legislature picked Douglas anyway.
If Douglas had been sitting in Ford’s Theater, the shot might have gone over his head.
I’ve read conflicting reports about who won the debates, and there’s no way to subjectively tell. All we know for sure is who went to Washington and who went home.
In any case, my original point was that Douglas would hardly be seeking a rematch, since he won the seat.
At least for modern debates, the candidate judged to have “won” the debates is almost always the candidate with the policies most similar to the policy preferences of the one doing the judging. I imagine it was the same then.
That doesn’t make sense, WW; the same media organizations often proclaim different winners of each debate.
I think the joke is that Douglas is wearing a very large hat, which he thinks will make him look as tall as Lincoln.

It was a CIDU for me because I thought that was a wooden cutout of Lincoln and figured the joke had something to do with Douglas not realizing it was a fake Lincoln.
After the debates, Lincoln and Douglas edited their respective transcripts. Pro-Lincoln newspapers printed the edited Lincoln and raw Douglas transcript, and pro-Douglas newspapers did the opposite.
