I don’t think the cartoonist is confused about what “lactose intolerant” means. The joke is that the phrase is being used in a different way than normal.

I agree but I’d argue associate being eat and chomped but focusing on the milk aspect is a stretch. Also intolerant is not the same as hating and dreading. I’m not intolerant to having my fingers cut off per se. At least I don’t think so. …. but this is good enough for comic work.

WW, isn’t “the phrase is being used in a different way than normal” the same as “confused
    about what ‘lactose intolerant’ means”?

B.A.: Not if they’re intentionally using it in a different way than normal, to make a joke.”Confused” implies they don’t know what they’re doing.

woozy: Yeah, if a giant picked me up, dunked me in milk, and then took a bite out of my head, I don’t think my reaction would be “gross, I hate milk!” :)

But… that’s simply not what the term means. You can’t just redefine existing phrases and call it a joke.

“You can’t just redefine existing phrases and call it a joke.”

You can do that. Whether or not you should is a different question, but I thought this comic was OK.

    Yeah, you can. Watch.

Under their new definition of “broadband Internet”, FM radio counts, because sometimes radio stations play “We Got the Beat”.
