This is one reason you empty out the pumpkin before carving it.
But what’s the joke here?

I think the cartoonist witnessed this scene, and thought “Well, there’s a strip right there. Somehow.” I find that Buni only occasionally uses logic or makes sense.
Loss of innocence.
I think there’s a bit of inconsistency in what a Bunni strip is supposed to actually *be*. Something surreal? Something with odd logic? Or a scene with pathos? This seems to be a scene of a child getting a rude awakening to life and … that isn’t *funny* per say but can evoke us… but that is utterly unlike anything Bunni usually is trying to do.
Anything can be sentient in Buni. Those squirrels murdered those poor jack-o’-lanterns and are eating their brains. Of course, jack-o’-lanterns are murdered pumpkins, so they died twice.
I don’t know, but it looks like maybe the cartoonist was thinking about “Night of the Living Dead” there.

It was just reported at Cracked.com a couple days ago that squirrels are bloodthirsty killers and sometimes cannibals. http://www.cracked.com/article_25985_5-horrors-nature-happening-in-your-backyard-right-now.html
