Arthur – That counter gets incremented each and every time any comment is submitted, even when the comment is placed in moderation. We can “see” only the comments that Bill clears. When a comment that turn out to be spam, duplicated, or otherwise unacceptable is later deleted, this does not reset the counter for the other existing comments. Thus, the counter will always be greater than the number of visible comments.
Heck, on a couple of occasions when I’ve experienced “click regret”, I’ve asked Bill to kill one of my own comments, and he was always happy to oblige.
P.S. @ Arthur – For what it’s worth, the counter rolled over in the single phone line thread, between here (9998) and here (10001), but the comment that actually received the magic “10000” must have been placed in some other thread.
Yes, only comments currently up. So rejected and deleted comments don’t count. So we’ll never know who actually wrote the 10,000th comment that showed up here.
So, no prize, ticker tape, confetti or . . . cake.
Someone has to say this, so it might as well be me. “The cake is a lie.”
beckoningchasm, thanks for mentioning Business Cat. I looked it up, and now will have it on my reading list!

Well, here’s one more comment! And it’s relevant, because I say “This site is awesome.”
Also, “The Adventures of Business Cat” is coming to a close today.
is there a prize for being the 10,000th commenter? Will there be ticker tape, confetti and cake?
Will we find that the new site has a C10K bug? We’ll find out soon.
Bill, you’re probably counting comments currently on the site, and not counting ones from nuked thread. I say this based on the URL of my previous comment:
