I think Bill’s analysis sums it up nicely, but I would like to know why the boy hasn’t been turned to stone.
Medusa’s power over men, like most women’s, is not yet at full power until puberty has had some time to work.
Birds actually do eat little snakes just as if they were worms, but I don’t think the cartoonist necessarily knew that.
I got nothing to contribute but since this is the start of the 24 Hour Project I had to say something.🐍
I thought her hair was turning the birds to stone as they flew over, but that didn’t actually end up making sense in the scene… Darn

I took it as just an excuse to invoke a classic Carpenters song.
Her snakes are activated by hormones, just getting started for her now.
